Limited-production red from the winery
behind £105-a-bottle ‘Petrus of Tuscany’
Super Tuscans are among the world’s most
sought-after wines, so to say we were excited
by this find would be an understatement.
First of all, it’s from Petrolo, one of the original
famous Super Tuscan wineries. Its 100-point
Galatrona, known as the ‘Petrus of Tuscany’, sells
for £105 a bottle (see below) and was rated the
second best wine in the world by James Suckling.
As for this wine, Torrione, it’s become an icon
in its own right. A blend of Sangiovese, Merlot
and Cabernet Sauvignon, from some of Petrolo’s
oldest vineyards, the estate describes it as
“the true identity of Petrolo”.
Rich black cherry and plum fruit is supported
by hints of dark chocolate, wild herbs and spice.
There’s a silkiness of texture that makes it so
delicious already, but there’s no doubting the
age-worthiness of this Tuscan jewel.
There are top scores across the board from
the wine press too ... “complex and structured,
but ethereal and weightless at the same time.
That’s where generosity meets delicacy”
(95pts, James Suckling).
Then there’s the vintage ... “Tuscany’s recently
released 2021 vintage could be this celebrated
region’s best year yet” (Wine Spectator).
Tuscany’s best-ever vintage? Surely that’s
