This month our focus is on Australia
... in a somewhat bittersweet way.
Australia is where my love for wine
– and the people who make it – truly
began. I just love the place.
But I have to say, it’s in a bit of a
difficult spot right now. The story
really starts with China, where demand
for Aussie wine has dropped away
sharply as an overhang of a period
of eye-watering tariffs.
On top of that, we’re also seeing the
after-effects of government incentives
in the 90s when, as our buyer Ben in
Sydney puts it, “every doctor and his
dog planted vines.”
Ben is
managing to
secure some
outstanding bottles
– including famous
names we’ve never
previously been able to
offer – as producers work
to rebalance their stocks.
Just look at pages 6-7 ... We’ve never
been able to offer a £1,000 saving on
a case before. Doubt we will again.
It must be said though that
opportunities like this won’t last,
so as the Aussies themselves say
... “get amongst it!”
The result? A lot of really great wine
now looking for a home.
The upside is that this is a fantastic
moment to be an Aussie wine lover.
