Unlock the great Saint‘Premier Grand Cru’ se
New Épiphanie coup revealed (almost) ... a Bordeaux insider deal without
Épiphanie wines are born of close relationships
with some of the wine world’s greatest estates.
And they don’t come any greater than the
source of this remarkable claret.
The wine is from one of the legendary
Saint-Émilion estates who were classified as
Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’ until 2022. In fact
we can narrow things down even further ...
“It has a wonderful bouquet that is very
floral in style and perfectly controlled ...
The palate is medium-bodied with a silky
smooth entry, finely tuned with impressive
mineralité ... it exudes sophistication”
Neal Martin, vinous.com, on the 2023
Grand Vin (96-98pts) of the estate behind
L’Épiphanie de Saint-Émilion
This is from one of the three estates who
abdicated that group when they felt recent
updated classification requirements didn’t
focus enough on actual wine quality.
We’ll spare you the internet search – the
châteaux who opted out were Ausone, Cheval
Blanc and, very recently, Angélus. Rest assured
that quality at all three properties remains off
the scale. Reservation prices for the 2023
Grand Vin from the estate behind L’Épiphanie
de Saint-Émilion start at around £450 a bottle.
Yet here’s a 2023 Saint-Émilion made with grapes
from the same vineyards (of which there are
just 7ha – this is a big name, but a tiny estate)
for £25 a bottle. It’s not the Grand Vin, but it is
superb claret ... and one heck of a buying coup!
Because in certain vintages when mother
nature smiles, these famous names don’t put
every drop of their wine into the Grand Vin
or second wine. Leaving a precious surplus.
At this estate, that wine was only ever shared
among owners and staff – until now. Most
Épiphanie wines are thanks to the connections
of our Bordeaux specialist Jean-Marc Sauboua.
But for this find, credit also goes to his son
Louis, who is following in dad’s footsteps and
now completing his wine studies.
