about a tiny vineyard not in Saint-Émilion, but
next door to a superb Grand Cru Classé estate.
You can see the two of them in the photo
below – just six metres apart. Both grow
amazing Merlot on the prized limestone
plateau that lends wines deep plum richness
and superb silky finesse.
The difference is that they lie either side of a
boundary ... an arbitrary line devised in 1934,
guided by politics, not geography. And that’s
why Enclos, directly next door, is such a steal.
The vineyard is part of Tony Laithwaite’s
Château La Clarière in neighbouring Castillon.
He bought the estate in 1980, and using Grand

Haut-Brion-trained winemaker, Jean-Marc, at
his side, he’s won Trophies and Golds galore.
The estate has 30 tiny parcels of vines and
Enclos is its closest to Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Classé. It’s all planted to Merlot, grown very
sustainably and teaming with biodiversity.
Enclos is a luscious, deep claret, long aged in
fine oak casks and clay amphorae ... all the
methods of top-echelon claret. £20 a bottle
is a great price for the quality; at £14.99
it’s a terrific deal.
