FINE & R ARE WINE
Chianti Classico with matchless heritage
You’ll struggle to find a Chianti with
a more impressive history than this –
from a 13th-century castle that once
played host to Leonardo da Vinci.

Today the estate is owned by John
Matta (pictured in the hat, with his
team), a four-time Italian Winemaker
of the Year. His reputation is built on
meticulous attention to detail. Most
vineyard work is done by hand and
yields are kept low for optimum quality.
This fine Riserva is made from the
ripest Sangiovese grapes. The wine
is carefully matured in ancient cellars
beneath the castle in traditional large
oak casks known as botte. From an
exceptional vintage, this is supremely
elegant and aromatic with silky ripe
cherry fruit and layers of cedary
complexity. Fine tannins, great length
and, at four years old, ready to drink,
but with bags of ageing potential.

Silky Right Bank claret
with 9 years’ maturity
Velvety Burgundy from
historic family cellar
13-year-old Reserva
for Rioja traditionalists
This beautifully mature Bordeaux is
a smart buy in so many ways. First
off, it’s from Puisseguin, a satellite
region of Saint-Emilion. Very similar
quality and style, but at a friendlier
price. Plus it’s made by the owners
of 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion
Château Beau-Séjour Bécot – and
displays much of the same finesse as
its big brother. Finally, it’s from the
‘keeper’ 2016 vintage. A gorgeously
smooth Merlot-rich claret that’s
drinking perfectly right now.
Since 1880, the Drouhin family has
built up a patchwork of vineyards
across many of Burgundy’s finest
appellations. So this village Burgundy
is always a very safe bet – and
exceptional when it’s from a good
vintage like 2022. This is made from
parcels of Pinot Noir from Morey-StDenis and Chambolle-Musigny, all
hand picked and then gently pressed.
Crunchy redcurrant and raspberry
with a twist of spice and a kiss of
creamy oak. Silky smooth, top value.
López de Heredia is “one of the last
great bastions of Rioja tradition”
(Hugh Johnson). And as critic Luis
Gutiérrez wrote, “visiting the winery
is like time travelling to 100 years ago,
with no stainless steel or new oak to
be found anywhere”. The estate is
a cathedral to wine and tradition.
And this is a beautifully mature
Reserva with seductive, smoky red
fruit aromas, notes of truffle and
long, evolved red fruit flavours. Ripe,
smooth and at its drinking peak.
