Old-vine Spanish rarity to rival fine Burgundy
We absolutely love this one. Norrel
Robertson is the undisputed king of
old-vine Macabeo in remote Calatayud.
In fact, this release is so rich and
balanced you could easily mistake
it for top white Burgundy.

We could have dropped in a picture of
Norrel. But he insists that his vines are
the stars of the show, so here’s a shot
of his incredible 85-year-old-Macabeo
vines, grown at a lofty 1,000m above
sea level. They don’t produce many
bunches, but the fruit they do yield is so
incredibly rich and concentrated with
lovely freshness. A winemaker’s dream.
In the cellar, Norrel gives this the full
Grand Cru treatment, including barrel
fermentation and lees ageing, adding
rich texture to the super-ripe peach,
citrus and nectarine flavours. Smoky,
mouthfilling and fresh. Only gently
chill and enjoy with pan-fried fish.

Nothing else quite matches the
pristine elegance of a truly delicious
Chablis from a top-tier estate.
Domaine des Malandes is just that –
a property we return to year after
year because owner Lyne Marchive
and her team make consistently fine
mineral-fresh Chablis. This is full of
the seashell and wet stone character
that devotees crave, alongside green
apple and intense lemon elegance.
From a cooler vintage, this is pure,
pristine and 100% organic.
Sancerre is the apogee of classic
French Sauvignon, renowned for
elegant, crisp wines of immense
class and subtle sophistication. From
the Naudet family’s 5th-generation
Domaine des Buissonnes and their
prized Silex soil vineyards, this
wine combines a mineral-edged,
smoky gunflint character with racy
citrus fruit. Made from the grapes
of a single, highly regarded hillside
vineyard, this is an ideal partner for
scallops or goat’s cheese salads.
Trapiche is one of Argentina’s very
finest producers and this is their
greatest single-vineyard white. Part of
their Terroir series, the Chardonnay
grapes are from Los Arboles in the
Uco Valley. Planted at 1,300 metres,
the vineyard produces fruit of
remarkable freshness and purity.
Lithe and perfectly balanced, this
wonderful Chardonnay has seductive
lime and white peach aromas,
mineral freshness and creamy texture
thanks to lees ageing in oak barrels.
